Stun Guns can actually can have more "take down power" than a 9 MM handgun! I am 6'3",235 Lbs, and was on the floor in less than three seconds when "zapped" my first time. It took me 10 minutes just to get back on my feet!

The stun gun discharges its voltage into your attackers muscles at a high pulse frequency. The attacker (now victim) cannot produce energy for his muscles, and his body is unable to function properly for up to 60 minutes. Pepper spray and CS gas spray are chemical compounds that irritates the eyes , skin, and mucous membranes. Nausea, vomiting, streaming tears, difficulty breathing, pain, and even temporary blindness. Also a skin irritant, causes a burning sensation on any skin exposed to it. Often used in riot control, crowd control, and personal self-defense, including defense against dogs and bears.

These two forms of self defence are generally accepted as being non-lethal, although some (VERY RARE) fatalities have been reported.
